Cyril (Big Cy) F. Votava Nov. 17, 1923 - Nov. 5, 2004 We'd like to celebrate the life of our hero, and one heck of a man, our father, grandfather & great grandfather. He was born in Cicero, IL to Joseph & Gerogiana Votava and after a brief bout with cancer died at the age of 80 years. Cy passed in the loving embrace of his son Cyril F. Votava II, daughter-in-law Lisa Votava and special family friend Carol Rudnick in Surprise, Arizona. His presence was not only awesome physically but also in the entire realm of life. He could make you feel safe from the entire world with one of his loving bear hugs or stop you dead in your tracks with a single "look"! He had vast knowledge from algebra to mechanics and was always there to lend you a hand if need be. Earlier in his life he was an integral part of the Morton High School basketball and football teams as well as the music group and graduated in 1941. He entered Morton Jr. College in 1943 & in 1944 he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps to serve his country during WWII. Cy returned to Morton Jr. College following his duties in the Air Corps and won two state basketball titles in 1946 and 1947 before graduating. It was there that Cy eyed a beautiful gal, Charlotte Teborek, with long brunette hair and even longer legs. Each being full bred Czechs they saw eye to eye and they married January 17, 1948. Soon to follow were four children to fill their home. Cy held several jobs over time, most notably his service in Berwyn, IL as a Police Officer until 1959. Cy & Char were practical yet adventurous. In the early 60's an Air Corps buddy beckoned them to see the land of opportunity, Washington State. After a short visit they returned to Chicago and in 1963 they packed up the kids & house and moved to Mukilteo, WA. They settled in a home on Goat Trail with a view of Puget Sound and realized their dream. Cy began working for Sears Roebuck in Everett, where he used his artistic talent to redesign rooms for clients and started "Sears Home Improvement Division" in the early 70's. He was a people person and a true salesman who often went above and beyond standard customer service. He retired 20 years later from Sears in 1983 and became Char's #1 houseboy and quite an accomplished cook. Cy's children were always very special to him. He always had time to teach...a bat swing, a trig formula, the right way to tackle, physics, or the realities of life, AKA "the first hundred years are the hardest". Cy & Char started visiting Hawaii on their 25th wedding anniversary and did up through their 50th anniversary. They loved the islands - the tastes, smells and sights. Charlotte had passed just under six years ago and promised her man that they'd meet again in paradise...at their waterfall. We hope they've reunited. Big Cy was a family man and will be severely missed by his children, Cynthia & David Stevens, Craig & Samantha Votava , Candy & Allen Raymond and Cyril II Lisa Votava . He will also be missed by his grandchildren, Dawn Marie & Bill Krause, Kristen Stevens, Charity & Ryan Mabbott, Nicole Votava , Grant Votava . Great grandchildren Danielle, Jared & Andrew will also miss him. Our family friend Carol Rudnick will surely miss his ongoing companionship. His extended family & all of his friends will also miss him. "Aloha 'Oe, Dad!" Our family was blessed in meeting personnel of Sun Health Hospice in Arizona. Our special thanks to Noreen, Celia & Virgil for their loving care and support. Cy donated his body to ASU and only a private memorial will be held in Hawaii. Our family wishes donations in his name be made to: Sun Health Hospice & Care Service, 'Peoria Unit', in memory of "Cyril F. Votava ", Sun Health Foundation, 13180 N. 103rd Dr., P.O. Box 2015, Sun City, AZ 85372-9950 The family wishes to acknowledge our employers: Verizon, PWSC - Providence Everett Medical Center, Boeing and Brunswick, ME School District for their support while we were on leave during our family transition. | |||||||

Whether you knew him directly or indirectly, Arno Sindelar, 88, will be remembered as the most kind and gentile man you could ever hope to meet. The grandson of Czech immigrants, he embraced his heritage and strong sense of family and friendship. Growing up on a farm in Cedar Rapids with his brother Hugo and sister Marilyn, he developed his strong work ethic and frugal ways that persisted throughout his life. Clanging spoons or adding water inside of seemingly empty jars to extract every last morsel became his mantra that his children unknowingly emulate to this day. He joined the Army after attending Roosevelt High School and was sent to Germany at the end of World War II. With his military obligation complete, he used his GI Bill and was admitted to Iowa State, where he majored in Mechanical Engineering. While a Cyclone, he became a proud member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon (Sig Ep) Fraternity. To the frustration of his children, he always kept his word never to divulge the secret handshake of their brotherhood to them. With his degree, he accepted a position at Collins in Cedar Rapids, where he would meet his future wife, Joyce. While there, he worked on military and civilian projects as well as both the Apollo and Mercury space programs. Arno’s personality was well suited for working at Collins, which demanded intelligence, ingenuity and confidentiality. An engineer is essentially a trained tinkerer, and he was always looking to understand and improve upon all things mechanical. Whether fashioning a Barbie doll arm to make a car window roll up and down or maintaining his John Deere riding tractor of 60 years for summer mowing or winter plowing, he would always find a way to get the job done - eventually. During his more than 40 years at Collins, he and Joyce began their family, having four daughters and a son who would bear his name. His children would later give them 12 grandchildren. His family was his world, and he enjoyed the chaos of his children and grand children discussing all things real and imagined as they sat around the kitchen table. He would sit quietly, adorning a small smile, and absorbing all that he was responsible for. On the morning of March 3, 2018, with his family by his side, Arno peacefully went to join the love if his life of more than 50 years. He will be greatly missed by his children; Jo Ellen (Jim) Haddad, Terry (Lance) Betson, Peggy Sindelar-Schwarting, Arno Albert II (Tonya) Sindelar, and Jenny (Mike) LaPoint. Celebration of Life Services will be held for Arno at the Brosh Chapel and The Avacenter this Sunday, March 11, 2018, at 1:30 p.m. It is located at 2121 Bowling Street SW in Cedar Rapids.
