Excerpt from A History of the Czechs in Chicago, by Rudolph Bubenicek - pages 189 - 191 - "Many older people in Chicago and its outskirts who can well remember the excellent cigars of the Gold Star brand, prepared by the Czech maker Jan Liska.  They were on the market for over twenty years, and few other brands from Czech or other nationalities workshops and factories could be compared to them in quality.  Liska succeeded as a true master in his trade, although it was at the expense of profit, because in selecting the best tobacco and in his most careful preparation, he lost significant proceeds. He was born in 1854 in Kralovice in the region of Pizen, where his father Vaclav was a carpenter.

Liska's father died in 1866, and two years later his mother, Alzbeta, with young son Jan and older daughter Josefa, married to Hajek came to America, first to Chicago, where Josefa's husband, Hajek had gone a year earlier.  They were preceded to Chicago by two daughters, Veronika, who had married Vopat before crossing the ocean and Frantiska who in chicago married Antonin tauber.  The above named trio arrived in Chicago on May 16, 1868.  They were taken from the train depot by the Jew Kanturek to Fiser's immigrant shelter.  In two days the Lisks rented their first lodgings on Liberty Street, a small home with two rooms, from which they moved a month later to the house of tavern keeper Karel Pankrac on Sixteenth and Burlington (changed to S. Clinton) strets. Pankrac came from the old country about two years before the Liskas. After the Great Fire, Liska lived with his sister, the aforementioned Mrs. Tauber, on Maxwell Street between Beach (now Stewart) avenue and Canal Street.  His mother died there and was buried in the cemetery of Sv. Bonifac (St. Boniface),

When Liska reached the age of fourteen, he was sent to a Jewish cigar maker to learn the trade.  H stuied for two years, and like many young learners, he was made to do a lot of work, which had nothing to do with his trade.  For example, he oftten had to carry manure from the master's horse.  Liska carried manure on Madison Street west to Ashland Avenue, where he threw it out on the prairie.  We include this detail as an interesting example of where the west extended as Chicago was inhabited then,  When Liska learned how to make cigares, they were made simply by hand, without any kind of mechanical help.  The young learner had a great interest in his trade, and he early exhibited superior sill and agility.  When he finished studying, he used his knowledge of the trade.  He worked for various manufacturers, and of them he best remembered Alois Palda, who always treated him more as a friend than an employee.  Liska also attended Telfocvicnajednota Sokol, Sokul Gymnastic Union, and later he joined Cesko-Americky Sokol where he served in the office of secretary.  After a few years, when he was married, he founded with a group of ellow countrymen, a Czech lodge of the American fraternal organization Rytiri Phythivi (Knightsof Pythias) about which we will write later.  In 1876 he married Julie Lhota, daughter of Jan Lhota of Hatikov (Hatin) in the region of Tabor, who was brought to Chicago in 1854 as a two week old infant.  Jan Lhota, who in later years was a helper in a furniture factory, had three sons before Julie: Jan, Vaclav and Vincenc.  We have written about Vaclav in the chapter The First Czech Immigrants.  Their marriage was torn apart after fifty-four years by the death of Liska's wife, who had given birth to eight children: Jan married and living in Hillsboro, Wisconsin, Vaclav who had died having liven only four years, Otto settled in Auburndale, Florida, Vaclav living in Chicago, Bohus died at the age of forty-five, single, Jiri, living in Cicero near Chicago, married and caring for his father; lillian, widow of the Czech Chicagoan Vistajn, living in Kewaunee, Wisconsin and Edward living in Koleman, Wisconsin.  Of there children, Jan has two sons and a daughter, Vaclav a son, lillian three sons and Edward a son.

In the beninning of the eighties, Liska operated a small tobacco shop in Jilek's home on Canal Street between Twelfth and Bunker (now Crensaw), but not until later did he establish a store with cigars from his own workshop in chicago's Pilsen neighborhood, first on Laflin Street in the home of Frantisek Cech, and then on blue Island Avenue at Twentieth Street in the home of Jan Kralovec.  After living for twelve years in Pilsen, he move to Czech California, on Central Park Avenue and twenty third street, where he made cigars for anothe telve yers.  In 1920 he began his well deserved retirement.

John and Julia's son, John James Liska (born 1878 Chicago) operated a store in Hillsboro, Wisconsin.

With the help of Alan Picha and the Hillsboro Historical Society, Alan found some information and pictures of that store.

Alan's information:

Joseph Suchy sold his cigar business to John Liska (probably in the late 1910's or early 1920's, it was thought he came in 1916) and in March 1921 John Liska bought the building at 843 Water Avenue and started a restaurant, Liska's Koffee Kup and sold it in 1947. In the late 1950's this restaurant was purchased by Ken and Margaret Eastman, called Ken's Café. A couple years later, Margaret's parents, Bill and Agnes Sebranek were operating there.

The building is circled on these four images.  If you click on an image, it will open a larger version of that image.

Obituary Provided By Arlene, Who Has Helped Me Fill In Many Of The Missing Pieces For This Family
Mrs. John Liska, 75, for many years a well known and highly regarded resident of Hillsboro and who had made her home the past four years at Menomonie, Wisconsin, passed away Saturday, March 1st, 1958 at a Menomonie Hospital.  She had been in failing health for some time and following a stroke, had been critically ill the past two weeks.  Funeral services were held in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Menomonie, at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon, March 4th.  Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery at Menomonie.
Anna Brejcha, daughter of James and Anna Brejcha, was born February 26th, 1883 in Chicago, Illinois.  She received her education in that city where she grew to young womanhood.  ............ During the years Mr. and Mrs. Liska resided in Hillboro they were earnest workers in numerous community activiites, giving staunch support to various organizations that promoted the welfare and progress of this locality.  The death of Mrs. Liska has brought deep sorrow to a large number of people in Hillsboro and surrounding community who will remember her as a most sincere and loyal friend and an excellent neighbor.  Those who knew her best will also remember her as a beloved wife, mother and grandmother, whose generous kindness was expressin in her great devotion to her home and family and her thoughful helpfulness in behalof of other people.  In high idealism, in kindness, in practical assistance, and in devoted guidance and love of family, Mrs. Liska imparted to her companions and associates an inspiration and treasured influence that will endure through the years as a precious remembrance to all those who have been so deeply saddened by her death.

Article Provided by Alan Picha, who has helped me with obituaries, and pictures for this Liska family.

After thirty one years in business in Hillsboro, Mr. and Mrs. John Liska sold their store and restaurant, The Koffee Kup cafe, this past week to Mr. and Mrs. Donald A Newlun.  Mrs. and Mrs. Newlun assumed active management of the business Tuesday, April 1st.  Mr. and Mrs. Liska have moved to the new home which they recently purchased from John Hagenah and which is located just west of the high school auditorium.

It was on July 15, 1916 that Mr. and Mrs. John Liska, and their sons, John Jr., age 5, and Edward, age 2, came to Hillsboro from Cicero, Illinois.  They had previously lived in other small towns including Clyde and Crystal Lake, Illinois and chose hillsboro because they liked this community.

Mr. Liska was a cigar maker by trade and he immeiately opened a cigar making shop which was located where now is the M. M. Moon shoe shop.  At the same time Mr. and Mrs. Liska opened a cofectionary store which was located in the Rice building, now owned by Joseph Suchy who operates the Marigold restaurant at that location.

In 1917, Mr. and Mrs. Liska bought the building on main street here, located just north of the post office.  At the time they purchased the structure from Henry Brill, the building was vacant.  They immediately established a store there and in later years began to operate a restaurant in connection with the store.

They converted the upstairs into a fine apartment which was the Liska home for many years.  There on Liberty Day, in April 1919, was born their daughter, Anna Liberty, now Mrs. Robert Rudiger. (I googled April 5, Liberty Day, and the only good result was a VFW hall posting that April 5 was originally Gold Star Mother's Day.)

A few years after Mr. and Mrs. Liska came to Hillsboro his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Liska Sr., and his brother, Robert Liska, also moved to this city.  For a number of years Robert, or Bob as he was know to all, was employed as a barber in this city.  They purchased a home here, the house now owned and occupied by Mrs. Porter Greeley, and continued to reside there during the time they lived in Hillsboro.  Mr. and Mrs. Liska and Robert passed away a few years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. John Liska have been earnest workers in many community activities.  For many years Mrs. Liska has been a membre of the Elizabeth Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and has served as an officer of that group.

Mr. Liska was a member of the Hillsboro Commercial Association and has been greately interested in community sports events especially baseball.  In his younger years Mr. Liska played for fifteen years on "The Specials" , a well known Chicago Semi-pro baseball team.  This team played throughout the Chicago area and against opponents at Hammond and Whiting in Indiana and Burlington in Illinois. Three members of the team were later in the major leagues.  After coming to Hillsboro Mr. Liska played for a short while with the local team.

Mr. and Mrs. Liska have two sons, John Jr., who is in the insurance business in Milwaukee and Edward, who is the sports editor on the Dubuque, Iowa newspaper; and one daughter, Mrs. Robert Rudiger, of Rantoul, Illinois.

As they retire from their many years in business, Mr. and Mrs. Liska have many friends who wish them much happiness in their new

Hillsboro - Funeral services were held from the Congregational church here last Wednesday afternnon for Robert Liska, age 47, who died suddenly at Westfield after a week's severe illness with heart trouble.  Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery.

Bohumil Liska was born in Chicago, August 8, 1883 and died at Westfield, Wisonsin, Monday, May 25th, 1931.  Bob, the name by which he was best known, left Hillsboro some months ago to make his residence in Westfield where he had purchased and was successfully operating a barber shop.  About two weeks ago he suddenly became ill with a heart ailment, his condition becoming more and more critical until he passed away on Monday evening, May 25.

Mr. Liska grew to young manhood in Chicago where he learned two trades, that of cigar making and that of barbering.  About ten years ago he came, with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Liska Sr. to Hillsboro where he continue to live during the greater ahare of that period.  For several years he was employed here in the G.R. Lambert barber shop.  Shops that he operated himself were at Pewaukee and at Westfield.

Mr. Liska never married.  He was a member of Hillsboro Lodge of Knights of Pythias and had also been a member of the Hillsboro lodge of Odd Fellows.

He is survived by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. John Liska Sr. of Hillsboro; one sister, Mrs Lillian Wistain of kewaunee,Wis; five brothers, John of Hillsboro, Otto of Auburndale, Florida, James and George of Chicago, and Edward of Coleman, Wis,; and a great number or relatives and friends.

There were none acquainted with Bob Liska but called him friend.  Always cheerful, he was never complaining or discouraged.  Friendly and encouraging, he was the type of man that shared no hatreds or prejudices.  Sincerity and kindness of heart were outstanding qualities in his personality.  His death is a heavy loss to all those who knew him well.
