Chicago Daily
Tribune - April 21, 1902 - Explosion Hurls Girl To Death - As
William Grimstead sttod at the window of his flat on the fourth
floor of the Monterey, 63, Thirty Ninth Street, attempting to place
his two daughters out of reach of the flames that were destroying
it, an explosion forced one of them from his arms and hurled her to
the sidewalk. She was instantly killed , while he and his
other child were burned about the face and arms. The Dead -
Grimstead, Alice aged 5 years, daughter of William Grimstead, hurled
from window of fourth floor and killed on the sidewalk below; baody
taken to an undertaking establishment. The Injured -
Grimstead, Blanche, aged 9 years, burned about the face, arms and
head. Elbows also cut and burned. Taken to Baptist Hospital.
Grimstead, William, painter, aged 40 years, burned about the face
and head. Taken to Baptist Hospital. Mr. Grimstead's son Alfred, who was with his mother returned home from church during the progress of the fire, ignorant that a member of the family had been killed, learned the cause of the explosiion from his father at the Baptist Hospital. Mr. Grimstead said that he was preparing a pot of coffee on the gas range when an explostion occurred which wrecked the range and scattered portions of it around the room. Two other explosions quickly followed, accomlanied by a ruch of flame, and he ran with the children to the fire escape. The building, which is owned by Chauncey Blair and is worth $150,000 was damaged in the west wing to an extend of $50,000, but is fully insured. The fire ruined the furniture of eight families and the office equipment of two stores. The loss on these is estimated at about $18,000. The structure was build in wings with a court between them. In the west wing, facing 39th stree, Policeman James E. Crane discovered fire bursting from the windows of the fourth and fifth floors about 8 o'clock last night. He ran to Cottage Grove to turn in the alarm and when he returned he heard an explostion. The next moment Alice Grimstead fell near him on the sidewalk. While Grimstead clung to the fire escape with his remaining daughter, the clothing of both afire, Policemen Crane won, cheers from the spectators by climbing the iron ladder to the perilous perch, where father and child were calling for help. Reaching the fire escape Crane removed his coat and with it smothered the blaze on the garments of Grimstead and his little girl. Then, taking the firl in his arms, Crane descended to the third floor, followed by the half crazed fahter, and breaking a window, led the way to the street down the stairs..............The fire was a spectacular one. ........I was in the front room when I was roused by an explosion stated William Grimstead to Policeman Crane before he was taken to the Baptist Hospital. Where it occurred I do not know. Then came the smell of the smoke, and before I had a chance to think the flames burst into the room. My wife was at church and I grabbed my children and hurried to a court window to get them to a fire escape. When I reached it another explosioin filled with room with smoke, and I lost one of my children....... |
